I'm just going to put out this PSA:
Livejournal Scrapbook is going away and will be replaced by the mysterious "Photo Album". Your 10GB of Paid Member space is now 2GB. If you care, there is an explanation in Russian on the Russian news page. There's also a user-submitted translation.
+ You will no longer have access to your Scrapbook once this goes live.
+ Your images will redirect, but the URL will be different.
+ Unable to tell what will happen to any photos you have that put you over the 2GB limit.
+ Back up your Scrapbook just in case.
+ If you want your photos transferred over now instead of waiting, let them know here.

I'd like to replace my car in the next year; it'll be 10 next March and is already almost as worthless in terms of second-hand value as it can get while still being roadworthy. It's not fabulous on fuel economy and costs over £200 a year in VED. Not to mention the "well, it fits me... headroom in the back.
Thinking either VW, Honda or another Toyota - an Audi A1 would be lovely but srsly spensive for what's basically a Polo with a posh badge on the front. Alas, the replacement for my beloved Celica will cost £26k and isn't actually available yet - so no second-hand ones or ex-demonstrators available :( All the other Toyotas make me fall asleep in their "well, it's a box on wheels..." design.
So, VWs. Does anyone know what the Scirocco BlueMotion's like? It seems a sensible starting point, being both OMGfast *and* pretty damn eco-friendly. Slightly more affordably, what about the Golf BlueMotion?
Basically, I want a nice tree-hugging car with a (preferably) 6-speed manual gearbox, that fits people in the back who are taller than 5'3", and that has a good boot capacity. German or Japanese for preference, though I'll consider Italian at a pinch. Suggestions would be welcome :D

CAN => ability. I CAN drive at 60 mph in a built up area.
MAY => permission. I MAY NOT drive at 60mph in a built up area.
MIGHT => possibility. I MIGHT drive at 60 mph in a built up area (but I almost certainly won't).
IT ISN'T DIFFICULT.

This weekend, I finally got some knitting finished :D ( Read more... )
Of course, what this means is I have to cast on at least 2 new projects to make up for having finished things.

I've never lived anywhere that's had its own Duke & Duckess* before. Does this provide unexpected benefits? Can we call on them in an hour of need? Will I get a Christmas card?

I... have just been accused of having a love affair with Poland.
ETA And apparently I need to name my Knit-Your-Own-Perfect-Boyfriend "Polish Sausage Man".
And also apparently, I need to find a Polish sheep farmer, to keep me in yarn.
(Question for any Polish people reading: Is it as odd for you, reading about me getting all excited over Polish Stuff, as it is for me when Americans get starry-eyed about English things?)

And Oh. My. God. Y'know, I think I'm actually quite glad there wasn't a fourth season of Hut 33, because it couldn't possibly have matched up tot he wondrousness of my Yuletide gift, The Hazards of Grammar.
While it's true that peple tend to love characters they can identify with in some way (however small), Hut 33 could lie on top of a Diagram of Me and achieve around 90% congruence. This story takes that Perfect Fandomness and files off the uneven edges. It references Manchester University and Cambridge. It has grammatical pedantry that mocks itself. It has Polish. There is background codebreaking and maths geekery (the canon mentions Turing). Pretty much all it's missing is assassinations (despite Minka's best efforts) and singing.

This is the first Christmas *ever* I've woken up in my own house (I usually go back to the parent people on Christmas Eve). It feels a little odd, not having a stocking, but also a little odd in it's lack of oddness.
What, you like that too?( Read more... )
